Council of State Governments Fights Childhood Obesity: Grant Funds Programs in Six Southern States
LEXINGTON, Ky. — The Council of State Governments (CSG) has received a two-year, $300,000 grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation through the Leadership for Healthy Communities program to support efforts in six Southern states to reverse escalating child obesity rates. With this funding, CSG has created the Southern Collaborative on Obesity Reduction Efforts (SCORE). SCORE provides a mechanism for elected and appointed state and local officials to join forces to develop policies that improve nutrition and increase physical activity for children in their states.

Education Leaders Meet to Combat Student Obesity at National Symposium

LITTLE ROCK, Ark.—State and local education leaders are convening July 10 and 11 at the Clinton Presidential Center to review, amend and renew their ongoing efforts to establish school policies that promote student health and prevent obesity. The National Association of State Boards of Education (NASBE) is hosting the two-day event in collaboration with the National School Boards Association (NSBA).

Latino Elected Officials Address Childhood Obesity
PHILADELPHIA, Pa - Thirty Latino elected officials from throughout the eastern United States will participate in the Healthy Communities Policy Institute, an intensive program designed to enhance governance and health policy skills. The primary goal of the meeting is to develop effective tools and strategies to reverse the childhood obesity epidemic.

AASA Partners with Latino and African-American Education Associations to Address Childhood Obesity

ARLINGTON, Va. – The American Association of School Administrators (AASA) has officially partnered with the National Alliance of Black School Educators (NABSE) and the Association of Latino Administrators and Superintendents (ALAS) to address childhood obesity among some of the most vulnerable communities in the country. For more than 30 years, AASA has worked with school leaders on prominent issues that affect children’s health and academic success.
